The new library catalogue - faster, easier and more intuitive research

Conventional online library catalogues no longer meet today's requirements for a modern research system. Internet portals such as Google, Amazon and others are leading the way in this field. Users expect fast, simple and intuitive research across as many relevant sources and information media as possible. Paderborn University Library is taking up this challenge with the new library catalogue, which was launched as a beta version in September.

One answer to the above-mentioned problem is the product Primo from the company Ex Libris, which is used at hundreds of institutions worldwide, including some German university libraries. Primo is a software system based on search engine technology with which all types of information media can be searched and found in a modern way, regardless of format and location.

After lengthy preparations, in which the experiences of other Primo customers and Ex Libris were taken into account, the University Library made a conscious decision not to use the standard search interface supplied with Primo and to adapt it to Paderborn's specific local requirements. Instead, a new catalogue frontend was implemented in just 11 months. This meets the University Library's requirement to implement the new catalogue individually and optimally designed as the future heart of its information offering.

The new catalogue offers a modern, intuitive user interface. The search results are sorted by relevance as standard, but can also be re-sorted by year of publication or author as required. Subsequent improvement or restriction of the search results using facets is possible in a variety of ways.

The new catalogue is linked to the user administration of the library system, so that not only can the new library catalogue be searched, but all account information is also directly available. Users can extend the loan period of borrowed books, reserve books borrowed by other users or order media from the stacks. A real-time synchronisation with the library system shows the availability of items at any time.

In addition, the new catalogue offers the option of creating individual literature lists after logging in and saving researched titles there permanently. An export function to standard reference management programmes is also available, as is the option to send lists by e-mail.

When developing the user interface, care was taken to ensure that the new catalogue can be used optimally with mobile devices. Thanks to its responsive design, the new catalogue automatically adapts to the common resolutions of smartphones and tablet PCs and can therefore also be used on the move.

The version of the new catalogue launched in September is currently in the beta test phase and is therefore undergoing continuous development. The existing catalogue will continue to be offered until further notice. Feedback and suggestions for improvement submitted via the feedback button will be gradually incorporated into the further development of the new catalogue. This gives users the opportunity to actively participate in the further development of the catalogue.

Curious? - You can find the beta version of our new catalogue at: katalog.ub.uni-paderborn.de.

Students' competition "Study Fiction - Videoclips zur Zukunft von Studium und Lehre"

DINI - the German Initiative for Network Information - is looking for your video clips in a nationwide competition ...

... on the future of learning and teaching at universities. There are (almost) no limits to your imagination and creativity in terms of content and artistry. You can

  • your wishes and hopes or
  • expectations and fears or
  • possible scenarios and forecasts

about studying, learning and everyday student life for the next generation of students. You decide the genre, whether feature film or documentary, comedy or thriller, feature or interview - clips of all kinds and with any technology are possible.

Everyone can take part! As students at universities of applied sciences and universities, you have had a variety of experiences in studying and learning - both positive and negative - and have developed an idea of what studying and teaching, services for students, infrastructures and the technological and organisational framework conditions could look like in the future. The rapid changes in media and networks make it difficult to make predictions, but DINI would like to encourage you to think about the future of studying and teaching from this perspective in particular and to express it on film.

Applications from groups or seminars of students from different disciplines are expressly encouraged.

The content of the future scenarios, the creativity and originality of the realisation in a short film will be judged. The quality and professionalism in the mastery of the cinematic craft play a subordinate role, as students from all disciplines should be given equal opportunities.

Federal Minister Prof Dr Annette Schavan is the patron of the competition. Entries for the competition can be submitted online to DINI until 2 May 2013. The prize will be awarded to the winner(s) selected by the jury at the DINI annual conference in autumn 2013. The winner selected by a jury will receive prize money of 5,000 euros.

Innovations in interlibrary loan: use of the acquisition proposal assistant (EVA) for demand-orientated media acquisition

On 26 June 2012, following an extensive test phase, Paderborn University Library put the "Acquisition Proposal Assistant" (EVA) developed by the NRW University Library Centre (hbz, Cologne) as part of a MALIS project into operation.

After an interlibrary loan request has been placed by the library, EVA can be used to check whether the desired medium is of interest to other users and should therefore be acquired for the Paderborn University Library's collection.

In line with the thesis that "interlibrary loans are gaps in the local collection that are perceived by users", EVA thus supports the University Library in its endeavours to acquire literature in line with demand.
